Speaker Giovanni Vaz is the 13th Speaker of the ASUP Senate and an ASUP Senator proudly serving the Sophomore Class. On April 14th, 2025, he was elected by his colleagues to serve as the Speaker. As a member of ASUP, he represents over 500 students with Sophomore standing. Giovanni was first elected to ASUP on September 18th, 2024, and is currently serving in his second term.
Prior to being Speaker, Giovanni served as an ASUP Senator for the First Year Class, one of the five elected leadership positions he has held in his lifetime. As a First Year Senator, Giovanni voted to approve hundreds of thousands in funding for clubs and organizations on campus. He also co-sponsored legislation aimed to streamline club funding requests and to lower barriers for ASUP involvement. In addition, Giovanni authored legislation to enhance and formalize the structure of the ASUP Senate.
Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Giovanni carries with him the spirit and resilience of his hometown. As the son of immigrant parents who have proudly worked blue-collar jobs, he brings a deep, personal understanding of the challenges faced by working families in the Portland community. Giovanni is ready to continue the fight to ensure all UP students have the resources they need to succeed.
